Everything You Need to Know About Hoof Care
Summer or winter, discover the ideal routine and the mistakes to avoid to protect your horse's hoof horn.
Just like your fingernails, your horses' hooves are made of keratin. They need regular, specific attention and care to keep them healthy and in good condition!
Whatever type of care you carry out, it must ALWAYS be done on a clean surface, with clean, dry hooves, and on a regular basis!
Allow the time needed for cleaning, application and "drying time", around 20 to 30 minutes, if you want an effective result. Do not soak the hooves just before or after, and do not turn the horse out in the field or put it back in its stall straight away either!
NEVER apply Norwegian tar to the hoof walls!
The regular and necessary care for your horses' hooves includes:
- A daily cleaning to remove stones, pieces of wood, soil, etc., using a hoof pick and a soft wire-type brush.
- A detailed inspection of the top and underside of the hoof to check for injuries, cracks, bruises or foreign bodies...
- In summer and in dry weather, good hydration with a blond oil or ointment, enriched with laurel and/or other natural products ([see our products]) 2 to 3 times a week, no more! Otherwise the horn becomes saturated with grease and turns soft, or becomes brittle and crumbly.
- In winter and in wet weather, prefer a natural black ointment, applied 1 to 2 times a week ([see our products]).
Apply with a brush on top and underneath, focusing on the coronet band. - In parallel, you need to treat the frogs with different specific products such as cade oil, Norwegian tar, Villate's solution, and other more specific products depending on the condition or sensitivity.
